Top 5 family activities in Manchester

Whether visiting for the day, a weekend or a little longer, Manchester offers a wealth of family-friendly activities and attractions for you to enjoy.

Here, we look at 5 of the best things to see and do when visiting Manchester as a family:

Museum of Science and Industry

If you want to have fun but are also keen to learn something at the same time, make sure you visit the Museum of Science and Industry.

Situated just outside the city centre on Liverpool Road, Castlefield, here you'll be able to find out more about how technology has developed over the years from the Industrial Revolution right through to the modern day.

Located in what is the world's oldest surviving railway station, visiting the museum can give you an insight into Manchester's textiles industry and what it was like to work in the cotton mills some 150 years ago.

Other attractions include a 4D theatre and a replica of a 19th century sewer where you'll be able to learn more about the role sewerage played in Manchester's development and public health, while a range of temporary exhibitions are held throughout the year.

There's also the chance to see World War II fighter planes and ride around on a replica of Robert Stephenson's 1830 Planet locomotive steam engine.

Open every day of the week from 10:00 to 17:00, entrance to the museum is free. However, you may have to pay in order to enjoy certain exhibits and attractions, such as the regular shows held at the planetarium.

Legoland Discovery Centre

Children and big kids alike are bound to love the Legoland Discovery Centre. Situated in Manchester's Trafford Centre retail complex, here you'll be able to build models made from the colourful plastic bricks.

You can also go on a number of themed playground rides and visit Professor Brick-a-Brack to find out how exactly Lego blocks are made. Children can re-enact their favourite fairytales in the Princess Palace zone, or live out dreams of being a hero in Kingdom Quest.

The attraction is open seven days a week from 10:00 to 19:00, with last admission at 17:00.

Entrance on the door is £16.20 per person, although a number of money-saving family packages are available. However, booking a ticket online in advance of your visit will allow you to take advantage of even better deals.

Heaton Park

Make sure your family gets some fresh air by visiting Heaton Park. Some 650 acres wide and the largest public park in Greater Manchester, there'll definitely be plenty of space for you to stretch your legs.

You could go for a stroll through the extensive gardens, although if you fancy being a bit more active there are facilities for you to play football, bowls and tennis. Take to the water by visiting the boating lake, while you can also go fishing here.

There's the chance for you to visit several historic stately homes and see farmyard creatures at the animal centre, while beekeeping demonstrations are held at the park every Sunday.

Situated four miles north of the city centre, you can reach the attraction by tram (alighting at the Heaton Park stop) or take one of a number of buses, the 135, 138 and 151 are just a number of the routes that stop off here.

Manchester Climbing Centre

For something a little bit different, why not spend a day at the Manchester Climbing Centre?

Situated at St Benedict's Church, Ardwick, there are a number of walls to scale with routes suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Safety equipment such as harnesses, belay devices and climbing shoes are all available to hire here, while helmets are provided for free, so there's no need for you to worry about bringing anything with you.

A range of price packages are available and by becoming a member you'll be able to benefit from reduced admission rates.

However, non-member adults visiting during peak hours, which are 16:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, will have to pay £8.80. Admission for non-member concessions is £8.30.
Wheel of Manchester

Back in the city centre, you'll find a ride on the Wheel of Manchester to be a great family activity.

Located between the Triangle shopping centre and the Selfridges department store and near the Radisson Edwardian hotels which is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Manchester, going on this giant ferris wheel is a great way to take in fantastic views for miles around.

Who knows, when you get to the top of the 60-metre high ride you may even glimpse some of the other awesome attractions that Manchester has to offer!
