A maze of colors, flavors, scents, sounds and voices. The scent of mint
tea, the colors of the fabrics and the screams of the vendors capture the
visitor in the Medina. The smell is rapt by the shops selling dried fruit,
provoked by the pyramids of spices, outraged by the pungent stench of the
tanners. Your fingers will run through soft cloths that blind the sight with
their bright colors. The deafening shouting among the shops selling articles
ranging from amulets to fight spells to henna to dye your hair. But the real
magic is in Djemaa El Fna Square, where the crowd gathers around storytellers,
jugglers, tumblers acrobats, bear and monkey-tamers, comedians, musicians
and African dancers. Djemaa El Fna has been for centuries the cross-roads
for Berber shepherds, Saharian nomads, Arab traders and slaves deported from
the rest of Africa. In the past, camels from Timbuktu and from the oases
beyond the Atlas range stopped here; today farmers arrive by bus, and shepherds
come here to watch this outdoor music hall, to buy walkmans and sunglasses,
to dictate a letter to one of the scribes perched between the stands.
